The Peoples Alibi: 'Live Demo'
2002
Self Released
The Peoples Alibi: 'Demo CD' First song 'The New Militia' starts with a burst of speedy guitar, a "one, two, three, go!" count and is followed by stomping drums, low grumbling bass and snarly vocals. It tells you quite a bit about The Peoples Alibi, who definitely take an old school attitude to their song writing with less emphasis on sickly catchiness and more on a sound that gradually gets you hooked after a few plays, which also sees you accepting the less than perfect live sound quality. The vocal style is a phlegmy snarl, which is difficult to describe without using the words 'Tim' or 'Armstrong' as a reference point with frequent dual vocals and '"hey"s lending an anthemic feel to the choruses. Each of the five songs here has something worthy of praise, but especially 'Authority' and 'Reason 2 Believe' with their sing-a-long choruses although the stomping sound of 'The New Militia', the repetitive guitar solo on 'Everyday' and the laid-back bass line on 'No Explanation' are not to be ignored. They have some common ground with the original British punk bands, particularly the lead guitar sound, but with many other influences rounding off and filling out their sound it becomes quite unique and far from retrospective.

The Peoples Alibi: 'Get Up, Stand Up' EP
2002
Self Released
The Peoples Alibi: 'Get Up, Stand Up' After an impressive, but slightly rough live demo and recent blistering live performances I had been really keen to get this EP and I wasn't disappointed. In fact, I've been listening to it constantly. For starters, an EP with ten tracks?! Then there are the much tighter, spruced up versions of the five songs that originally appeared on the live demo and finally, five excellent new songs, including my live favourite, 'Feed Off Your Aggression'.

One of the main reasons I like The Peoples Alibi so much is that they don't sound like any one band. Their original style occasionally hints at a classic punk band but they seem to mix all the best stuff from the whole back catalogue of punk, old and new, to give them a great old school/street punk sound that's still melodic, catchy and very enjoyable. A great combination of lead guitar tunes, crunching guitars, grinding bass and pummeling drums all work together with gutsy vocals to produce lively, attitude filled songs. The diversity in sound is helped along nicely by having two vocalists who are suitably aggressive and snarly, but can also vary their delivery to suit the song and manage to remain tuneful rather than harsh.

The song titles reflect the lyrical content; 'Feed Off Your Aggression', 'Plan Of Attack', 'Freedom 2 Fight', 'Personal Vendetta' and these are indeed aggressive and assertive but with an anthemic feel that's uplifting and brings a sense of unity. That said, there is still some variety in the song content, most notably on the introspective 'Everyday' and the almost pop song of 'Pretty Thing', but each song here is a glowing example of brilliant, original punk rock and I can't wait for the 30-track album!
