As Barefoot kick off tonight with the already classic 'Stand Alone' the sound woman appears to lend a technical ear to the proceeds. Although she needn't have worried as Scotland's finest pop punk band are back in fine form, albeit with a shoogly mic stand, but she soon gets that sorted for the guy behind the drums with the seventies edition Mayfair magazine. There's no explanation of the Mayfair magazine but we do learn why Chris is drinking diet Irn Bru instead of beer; he's on a bit of a diet and has also done his back in with some ill-advised cycling. At least tonight when he asks "How are you all doin'?" there's a prompt response from a guy near the front, who would appear to be enjoying himself fine, thank you very much, and continues to share in some banter with Chris during the rest of their excellent set. Gazzo appears to be in a bit of a spotlight and it suits his guitar hero rock moves, although the sound he manages to create is, thankfully, not one with boring solos. On introducing 'Taken In' Chris informs us that it was written about his ex "who was a cow". In reply to this drummer Andy quips "Aren't they all?" and everyone laughs, but I thought he said 'Aren't WE all?' and was laughing at a whole other joke. But the jokes and cheeky banter don't detract from the live sound; in fact after some casual chat it makes for even more of an impact when they launch into one of their blistering songs like 'Everytime' and 'Deceive Me' or one of the quieter, touching songs like 'Cold'. They finish off tonight with a song that has elements of both, the powerful 'Different Town'. |
