Bad Religion
Sunday 12th May 2002 Barrowlands, Glasgow |

As Bad Religion saunter on to the stage, it appears something is not quite as planned so they leave and start all over again. After messing around and in reply to their own call to "Play some fuckin' music" they launch into 'Suffer' quickly followed by 'Punk Rock Song'. Greg Graffin apologises for their 6-year absence from Glasgow and generally tries to fill in the time as they try to get their equipment sorted out. Then the first of several new songs 'Supersonic' is followed by the much older 'You' and it is at this point when I think, "Fuck! Bad Religion!" Yes, Zelda, Bad Religion are quite the living legends. Singer Greg with his unassuming style effortlessly delivering some of the most intelligent words in punk rock, guitarist Greg Hetson jumping around mouthing all the words like a kid who's joined his favourite band on stage and bassist Jay Bentley, decked out in a kilt, beer bottle never far from hand and belching loudly and frequently. Yes, quite the living legends. 'Prove It' and 'Can't Stop It' from new album 'The Process of Belief', sound every bit as good as the following 'Them And Us' or 'Stranger Than Fiction', all with their relentless pace coupled with those undeniable melodies. They play a good mix of songs from most of their albums and with 20 years of excellence to choose from, they certainly know how to pack them in. 'No Control' goes straight into 'Epiphany' and despite seeming to have a few technical problems the sound is amazing, running one song into the next without giving you a chance to even breathe and it's totally overwhelming. Besides his frequent belching, the kilted bassist also displays a bit of a talent by catching a half finished pint in mid flight and proceeding to fill his beer into it. 'Kyoto Now' and 'Sorrow' follow 'Atomic Garden' then they have a chat about what it is to be Scottish before announcing, "this song is 'No Control'!" The band seem bemused but offer to play it again if Greg is really keen but then they opt for 'Recipe For Hate' which careers into 'I Want To Conquer The World'. After 'Infected' singer Greg announces that this would be the end of the show, but seeing as they hate the concept of encores they just pretend to go off stage and return giving thanks for the imaginary, overwhelming response, which in turn gets some cheering and clapping. They do in fact have some more songs, 'Fuck Armageddon...This Is Hell', 'American Jesus' and last but certainly not least '21st Century (Digital Boy)'. It makes for one hell of a pretend encore to a show of around 30 classic songs spanning their whole, inspiring career. |
