I believe that this is the debut gig for the young Anarchix and what a start. The drummer treats us to her rendition of that great punk classic 'I Will Always Love You' displaying the first signs of their not exactly serious approach, which continues throughout their set with lots of good-humoured banter between the girls and the crowd. The sound is a wee bit ragged in places, but the bassist only joined on Wednesday and the singer has a strong clear voice, which helps things along. Their own songs are about necrophilia, Madge from Neighbours and Tony Blair with covers of Michael Jackson's 'Beat It' and the Misfits 'Skull' giving a bit of a mish mash of styles but it's early days and I think they'll eventually define their own style, whatever that will be. At the end of their set there's much cheering and laughter too it has to be said, although to be fair, I think the latter is for the guy who got naked. American band Digger give us much less joking around and much more in the way of solid, rocking pop-punk. Although some of the songs get a bit samey at times, their up tempo and up lifting style is very enjoyable; fast snare drums, two guitars and at times three sets of vocals. They've plenty of nice things to say about the Turtlehead guys and everyone in Falkirk too, even Sandy the naked, dancing boy who gives us a repeat performance in the middle of their set. As the singer says, "It's not a party without the naked guy!" and besides it gives him another chance to use what would appear to be a new word for him, 'plums'. This is the last night of the European tour with Turtlehead and it's obvious that apart from picking up new meanings for everyday words, they have thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Now Turtlehead are usually full of banter and manage to be very entertaining between blasts of excellent melodic punk tunes. Tonight they are what can only be described as on top form with a lot of in band jokes and just plain silliness in the form of some impromptu skits covering everything from Rocky Horror to impressions of the guys from Digger, "Play the Clash again!". They play mostly new songs from their unreleased third album, which is going to be a stormer if tonight is anything to go by. 'Brian Can't Pull' is already a favourite with everyone who was at the Hey Suburbia Festival and every song seems to be faster, louder and harder than the previous and I'm surprised they've got any energy left for messing around between songs. For cover versions they manage to add a new daft one in the form of 'Happy Birthday Sweet 16' as well as the more fitting 'Kick Out The Jams' and 'Hey Suburbia'. Near the end they play a couple of oldies, 'Ruin My Day' followed by a cracking version of their 'Video Killed the Radio Star' with the guys from Digger joining on backing vocals and a bit of a stage invasion, making it feel like New Year without the streamers, before finally leaving us with 'Hate Him'. All round entertainment, probably. |
