Good Riddance / Death By Stereo
Thursday 18th October 2001
The Cathouse, Glasgow
Good Riddance Good Riddance Death By Stereo
Good Riddance ticket
Having only heard one song from Death By Stereo I wasn't too sure about what to expect from them live and I think most other people here tonight were the same. Appearing from behind a wall of thick smoke they blasted into their first song. Loud guitars, pounding drum rolls with vocals on the verge of shouting and on more than one occasion, screaming. They are also very lively with loads of energy and high jumps. The singer seemed rather bemused by the lack of frenzy in the pit and decided to venture out there himself to see if he could liven things up, but to be honest I think he just scared most of the kids! He also came right up to those of us at the barrier and screamed right into our faces. But finally resigned to the fact that they were only the support band they just stayed on stage and gave it their best anyway. Their sound is a bit on the metal, guitar solo side for me but you've got to admire their enthusiasm, energy and (quite literally) in-your-face attitude.

Good Riddance have much the same attitude but with less guitar solos and unfortunately also less enthusiasm. Of course being the main band they couldn't resign themselves to a lack of pit action and even after encouraging everyone to be livelier and a few bodies appearing over the top of the barrier they're still not satisfied. Is it just me, or do American bands whine too much? You know we all paid to get in here tonight; there's clapping, cheering and a few guys crowd surfing. Still Good Riddance are not impressed with us, and you know something, I'm feeling a little less impressed with them as they continue to demand more appreciation. I try to ignore their attitude and just enjoy the music, which when taken on it's own is pretty cool and their new drummer (previously of the excellent Kid Dynamite) pulls some entertaining expressions, but it's the whole thing that counts and it does take away from your overall enjoyment. They return to play an encore asking "If we play more, what are you going to do for us?" What, you mean apart from buying your records & T-shirts, paying for tickets and making 60 mile round trips to come to your shows only to be told we're not good enough for you?
